Bulls, Minotaurs, Cockroaches

I made a large graph based drawing with carbon and masking tape with a removable central panel that was meant to be about missing data. But I have also been thinking about the Minotaur and Labyrinth as one does from time to time and emptying out an upstairs room (I draw in the basement) I found a minotaur mask I made with my son years ago and it found its way onto the wall where I draw. I wasn’t very impressed with the paper drawing but the process left piles of carbon on the formica desk top that I attacked with my fingers and the strips of masking tape torn from the drawing, channeling my anger caused by govt manipulation, mishandling and misappropriation of scientific data for their own ends, into the discarded material, and located a bull charging out of the lines. Part bull part cockroach.

HMS Capitalism

This started as a drawing about graphs and bar charts re covid, economic growth and pictorial data in general. It became a container ship. A stinking Leviathan, courier of materialist tat, toxic waste and carbon manned by slave crews. But here it is delivering toxic, manipulated data to justify the decisions of a government that does not believe in society or social conscience. It is the biggest drawing i have done for a while. The use of masking tape is like the use of stone – I make decisions on what to keep and what to remove.

On a non-material level its the stinking vessel called Body powered by its effluent ego engine.

No plan here other than to play with materials. Good to use masking tape for non-utilitarian purposes. Good to bend it and to not swear when it tears. I was in two minds whether or not to peel off all the tape. Might make another one and do that. I actually made it this way

which puts me in mind of the Deleuze-Guatarri concept of rhizomes vs Platonic ‘trees’.

Drawing/Sculpture

Well this is a drawing-sculpture about the notion of equivalence I played around with at the end of my MA when I began to acknowledge the significance of the removed material and started thinking of it as more displaced or absented than disappeared.

Just as the present is dematerialised into dust awaiting reconstitution by memory.
